How to Earn Rewards While Skiing
Skiing is already one of the most thrilling things you can do in winter. But what if every run you took — every lap on your favorite chairlift, every powder morning, every flat-light afternoon where you almost stayed in the lodge — counted toward something bigger? That’s the idea behind reward systems in ski apps. They take the natural joy of skiing and layer on visible progress, personal milestones, and a reason to push yourself just a little further.
SnowRun’s reward system is designed to make every day on the mountain feel like it matters, whether you’re chasing a season-long goal or just trying to squeeze in one more run before the lifts close.
Gamification Meets Skiing
The concept of gamification — applying game-like mechanics to real-world activities — works especially well for skiing. A ski season is long, and motivation can dip during those mid-season weeks when the snow is icy and the weather is grey. Having something to work toward changes that equation.
Rewards give you visible progress across your season. Instead of each day feeling disconnected, you can see how today’s three runs brought you closer to a distance milestone. You get friendly competition — not in a high-pressure way, but in the sense that challenges give you a personal benchmark to hit. And on days when the conditions aren’t great, the motivation to complete a daily challenge can be the nudge that gets you out of the lodge and onto the slopes.
The key is that the rewards enhance the skiing experience rather than replacing it. You’re not staring at your phone on the chairlift grinding for points. You’re skiing the way you normally would, and the app recognizes what you’ve accomplished after the fact.
What Are Snowmiles?
Snowmiles are SnowRun’s in-app currency. Think of them like frequent-flyer miles, but for skiing. Every run you take earns snowmiles based on distance, and completing challenges earns bonus amounts on top of that.
You spend snowmiles in the SnowMarket — SnowRun’s cosmetic shop — where you can buy hats, goggles, scarves, and other accessories for Yuki, the app’s mascot. Yuki is a small animated character that floats on your map screen, and dressing Yuki up in gear you’ve earned is a surprisingly satisfying way to show off your season’s progress.
An important detail: there is no pay-to-win. Everything in the SnowMarket is cosmetic. No item gives you a competitive advantage or unlocks hidden features. The economy is designed so that an active skier earns enough snowmiles across a season to collect the items they want. Optional packs exist for skiers who want to unlock items faster, but they’re never required.
Your snowmile balance carries across seasons, so miles you earn this winter are still there next year. It rewards loyalty and gives returning skiers a head start on new items released in future seasons.
Challenges and Milestones
SnowRun offers two types of challenges, each designed for a different kind of motivation.
Journey challenges are season-long goals with multiple milestones. These are the big, ambitious targets that give shape to your entire winter. For example:
- Season Explorer — Ski at 5 different resorts in a single season. This challenge has 5 milestones, each unlocking when you visit a new mountain. It encourages you to branch out and try new places instead of sticking to the same hill every weekend.
- Distance Legend — Accumulate 100 kilometers of total distance across all your runs. With 4 milestones at 10 km, 25 km, 50 km, and 100 km, you watch your progress build week after week. Each milestone pays out snowmiles when you claim it.
Journey challenges give you a long arc to follow. They’re satisfying because you can see yourself getting closer with every day on the mountain.
Daily challenges refresh each ski day and offer quick, achievable goals. These might include completing 3 runs, hitting 50 km/h on a single run, reporting a trail issue, or skiing with a friend. Daily challenges are meant to add a small extra objective to your day — something you can tick off between lunch and the last lift.
Both challenge types reward snowmiles when completed. Journey milestones tend to pay more because they require sustained effort over weeks or months, while daily challenges offer smaller but more frequent payouts.
How SnowRun Helps
The reward system in SnowRun is built on a simple principle: you earn by skiing, not by paying. Every run you record automatically counts toward your active challenges. There’s no extra step to “opt in” to a challenge — your runs are tracked, and when you hit a milestone, you tap to collect your snowmiles.
Here’s what makes it work:
- Every run earns snowmiles — even a quick two-run morning session adds to your balance. No minimum distance or speed required.
- Challenges give purpose — instead of skiing aimlessly (which is also fine), you have concrete goals to work toward. “One more resort for Season Explorer” might be the reason you finally drive the extra hour to that mountain you’ve been meaning to try.
- Cosmetics personalize your experience — your Yuki mascot reflects your skiing identity. Deck Yuki out in the gear you’ve earned, and your home screen becomes a little trophy case of your season.
- No subscription required — the reward system is free. SnowRun’s core features — maps, tracking, challenges — work without a paid plan.
Streaks add another layer. Ski on consecutive days and your streak counter grows, unlocking badges at 3, 7, and 14 days. It’s a small thing, but seeing a streak build is a powerful motivator to get back on the mountain.
